Winniahdin Camp
Gloucester, MA

Winniahdin is the name for a neighborhood in West Gloucester originally developed for summer camps. Winniahdin translates to “In the Vicinity of the Hills” in Abenaki, though it is often said to mean “Pretty Little Hill.”
Wonasquam Home Design transformed this Dutch Colonial summer retreat perched on a ledge knoll into a lovely year-round residence. The gut-renovation involved a complete reorganization of the floor plan to create a more open and inviting space with modern amenities, while revamping the existing charming elements, like the westerly facing screened in porch with sunset views over the Little River.
While preserving the original rooflines and footprint, we added a small addition with decks to provide a covered entry porch and more attractive front elevation. Red cedar shingle detailing and subtle cottage paint colors pay homage to the vernacular camp, while bringing some elegant, yet comfortable life back into this picturesque property.
