Outdoor spaces are often overlooked, yet a thoughtfully designed garden, patio, or deck can significantly expand our homes by integrating the exterior with the interior. For this project, we collaborated closely with a landscape designer to transform the exterior into a private oasis, featuring a meticulously crafted landscape, decks, and a series of pergolas that seamlessly connect the different areas.

Tall, natural plantings were used to shield the home from the road and nearby neighbors, while creating a serene path leading to a side vegetable garden and a flowering meadow. We designed a series of natural western red cedar pergolas to frame the meandering decks on the western side of the home and to create an inviting entry off the driveway via granite steps.

The horizontal beams of the pergolas provide an ideal growing surface for vining honeysuckle and cast interesting shadows and shade over the side deck. A creeping hydrangea will eventually arch gracefully from the street and offer additional privacy for the outdoor hot tub.

The modern timber connection details are both clean and elegant, showcasing the pinning and “T” connections in the robust structure. These connections, combined with pinning to the ledge and stone stairs, allowed us to cantilever the driveway pergola towards the road, creating a secret and exciting entrance for guests and homeowners alike.
